I think another important factor is the fact that National Geographic no longer just produces specials, but an entire *channel*. Even with a repeated schedule, that's still 12 hours of programming to create each day, 7 days a week. Even with frequent repeats, that's still a helluva lot more material to come up with, and unfortunately it ain't all gonna be brilliant. Think about what happened to "news" programming once we entered the world of "24 hour news." Most of what is on those channels is crap as well. Sadly, I feel that our demand for endless variety and choice in TV programming has watered down the soup.
I agree that it's great fun to watch old programs. We have Nickelodeon's TV Land channel and KDOC here in Pasadena, and there is often a fun old chestnut on to watch. We enjoy the classic programs, although my wife often balks at the differences in gender roles - women being mostly just set dressing, victims or arm candy in those shows. That's why one of our faves is The Avengers. Emma Peel rocks! Cheers!
