The freezer trick sometimes works if it a hard drive only and not in an external case, and if when plugging the hard drive into a computer it simply will not mount. This is a last ditch effort when all else has failed and the expense of sending the drive to a data recovery firm can't be justified. I use Linux for data recovery as it will often mount and allow access to a drive that Microflaccid Windoze doesn't want to know about. But there are times when nothing works and wrapping Mr Hard Drive in a plastic bag and freezing him overnight occasionally will get the thing going long enough to retrieve some data. As I said only to be used as a last resort.
