After all that, I thought I'd try it again and the disc works fine. I

The problem there is that Macs have a lot of the same problems
nowadays. Malware writers are targeting Apple products more and more.
Apple itself strangles productivity of their own systems to force one to
buy only the products who have paid them off to be approved. At the same
time Apple products are not really upgradable. I should know, I had
several of both systems. Where Mac had been top dog in graphics for
years, they became less and less able over the various versions til the
PCs became the main machines as Apple killed their machines abilities
til they became what they are today, intentionally crippled PCs.
The way to get a PC to perform perfectly? Avoid installing any software
from anywhere until you have checked its reviews from several unrelated
places. It's scary how many "good" companies sell out and become the bad
guys.
