I use a Canon MG5220 with a CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System) that I
installed from this vendor:
http://www.inkproducts.com/ink-store441/home.php

I switched from OEM catridges to refillable cartridges from that vendor to
the CISS. Refilling the cartridges was no problem except me getting ink
all over the place despite trying not to do that. The cartridge refill kit
came with a chip resetter that reset the chips correctly each time. I
think you now have to transfer the chips from OEM cartridges to the
refillable cartridges. When I bought the refill kit many years ago the
cartridges had a chip so you did not have to do the transfer.

The CISS works very good. There where some initial problems but they were
overcome. Some are put off by the CISS because you have to leave the cover
partially open so the ink supply tubes don't get crimped. There is an open
cover bypass plug that is installed so the printer thinks the cover is
closed. The chips do not need to be resett on the CISS. You disable the
ink level monitor circuit on the printer and just monitor the ink level in
the external tanks. Refill whatever ink tank that needs to be refilled
whenever you want. You need to print something with the photo print
setting at least once a week to prevent one of the printhead nozzles from
clogging up. I did not know about that at first and noticed after a month
or so that the printer would not print grey or light blue.

Epson has a line of printers called EcoTank printers with an integrated
CISS.

I am waitng to see if they will ever offer a large format printer with that
feature and if someone offers the printers at a lower price.
