My condolences! Ouch.

Actually, I can tell you that I was in error. It works fine from read-only
media, verified several times over. The issue was actually an oddity that
I can't explain. I'll give you the details and you can make of it what you
will:

Win2k system

C: primary drive
D: CDRW
E: DVD-ROM
F: secondary drive

Okay, having made the executable with par, we then burned it on drive D.
Then, for whatever reason, my wife put the disc in drive E:, the DVD-ROM.
It read fine. However, Windows kept saying disk error, insert media in
drive D. It would say this many times--but if you closed all errors, it
would actually still run the program.

The funny thing is that inserting -any- media in drive D, even read-only
(we used Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun, for instance), entirely negated
the issue. No errors in that case.

Weirdest thing I've seen in a while.

Not sure what to make of it, either.

Sorry to trouble you with a false alarm. However, what -is- going on is
still a mystery. :-/
