The seismic datasets are coming from my own inversion/tomography code, and I usually just format them into a Paraview readable netcdf format.
In terms of projection capabilties, I'd be using it as soon as you push it. But, like I mentioned, I have reasoanble workarounds (projecting everything pre import). A gdal plugin that could load shape files would be really useful!
