Currently, Wyeth brand milk formulas were found to contain lutein and have been recalled from the market. There is no cause for alarm. Lutein is a permitted food colour in Singapore. Based on the formulations of Wyeth Progress Gold, Promise and Promise Gold Formulas currently being sold in other countries, we are of the view that the levels of lutein present in these products do not pose any safety concern. However, its use as a nutrient in infant formula, follow-up formula and growing up milk formulas is presently undergoing evaluation by AVA. Moreover, the nutritional benefits of adding lutein to these products has not yet been established. Therefore AVA has not approved the addition of lutein as a nutrient to these products. AVA’s circular is a reminder to importers not to import and sell infant formulas, follow-up formulas and growing up milk formulas containing lutein as a nutrient, before AVA has completed its evaluation and approve such use.
