This is just my opinion. (I've met Miguel a few times, but we're barely acquaintances, so I have no intent to speak for him.) I believe he had two goals. 1) Replace C as a system programming language. If you look at GNOME and GObject, you see how many gyrations people have to go through to achieve object-like behavior. Add to that all of the fun of memory management and memory protection, and C isn't a productive language for writing Unix applications. Sadly, there's still little better. 2) Improve developer tools. I have Vim and bash configured very nicely for my style of working, but refactoring support and documentation tooltips and other features could make me more productive.
