A long-standing feature request in Rakudo has been this:

  my $output = `shell-command arg1 arg2`;

I talked to Patrick Michaud about it, and he said that there's an old
ticket about this in RT (not Trac, due to the ticket's age). I didn't
find such a ticket; if someone knows which one it is, do tell me so
that I can upvote it.

There are several cases to be made for making this thing work. Not
only would it be good for the tests in Rakudo, it would also be good
for some of the tests in Parrot. Having this enables carrying on with
a test file even after something crashed.

On top of that, many existing Perl 6 projects today use nasty
platform-specific workarounds with tempfiles to acheive this. I heard
there's even something in Parrot which gives you a file handle to a
new tempfile in a platform-agnostic way.

Not finding the RT ticket in question, I'd like this email to be
considered my upvote.
