Here's the current status: I have talked to allison about this and have
her thumbs-up to get this applied to trunk. I've also gone through and
made a number of fixes and cleanups (removing unused stuff, codingstd
fixes, etc).
However, after a few recent commits to trunk this branch doesn't merge in
cleanly. I need to get that resolved before we can merge it.
