I can't comment on how to respond to an old mailing list since I haven't tried that yet, but asking about a new project release should have been as simple as either entering your email on the website or sending an email to [email protected] (the +(un)subscribe part should work for most mailing lists) and then sending an email with the question to the password-store@... email.
