This is slightly modified from the previous version of the patch (excitingly called coreutils-5.97-i18n-1.patch).
Since the original patch was not accepted, I'm not submitting this either. It sounds as though "planned for 6.0" means that it will be implemented quite differently. I'm happy to add a note to any existing thread for this proposed patch, but I can't find it in the coreutils mailing-list archive. Can Mr. Patrakov point me to it? There is some uncertainty over 'original version' here. I simply copy over the original 5.93 claim, as the modifications are to a file which is wholly created by this patch, and there has been no change in it since 5.93. However, for what it's worth, the version I actually built from is 5.97, and the patch is the 5.97 version patch. Feel free to adjust the 'original version' to 5.97, or indeed back-date the patch with its name to older versions. The original, unmodified header of coreutils-5.97-i18n-1.patch follows, just so you don't have
to look it up: *** OLD PATCH HEADER START *** Submitted by: Alexander E. Add this header.

The critical changes are just adding in ${srcdir} before mb1.I and mb2.I
so they can be found when building out of the source tree.
The attached coreutils-i18n-1.patchpatch.bz2 may be more useful,
simply because it patches the patch file, and will probably work for
the patches for older versions of coreutils, though it has NOT been
tested with anything but 5.97.
