I second Herndon's sentiments. I am biased because I sit on the EC Council
continuing education board, but even before I joined that I was impressed with
the content and depth of the CEH certification. It really requires a broad
knowledgebase to be successful on the exam.
You have to start somewhere, and either of these two would be good starting
points.

If you are laughing at CEH, then I think you have become a bit jaded! The CEH
cert is not easy, and is fairly well-respected in my experience. There are no
certs that will be universal.....there is always some staleness in every
certification due to the nature of the necessary standardized testing, leadtime
for development etc. But the CEH, IMHO, is one of the better ones if you are
after a technical cert. Otherwise, just commit some high-profile break-in,
serve your time, then use that street cred as your certification. Good luck
with that.
