PAC should forget about contesting elections: Qwelane March 20 2009 , 5:55:00 Veteran journalist and Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) stalwart, Jon Qwelane, says the party should forget about taking part in the April 22 general elections, as it is nowhere near ready to take on leading parties such as the ANC and newcomer Congress of the People in the poll. Qwelane says the party should instead call for a national congress of the PAC to seek a fresh mandate from its supporters and Africans in general. He made the remarks while delivering the Langa/Sharpville Memorial Lecture at the Nelson Mandela Gateway in Cape Town last night. PAC lacked the vision The long time political commentator did not shy away from controversy either, saying the current leadership of the PAC lacked the vision of its founding President Robert Sobukwe. Qwelane says the party needs to, as a matter of urgency, attract a talented team of advisors to help it draft a five year revival plan ahead of the 2014 vote. Qwelane also lambasted the decision by former leaders of the party not to maintain contact with its international supporters after their return from exile, saying this was one of the reasons the PAC had no coffers to speak of. He also urged party members to champion African unity saying a United States of Africa and the return of land to the black majority were Sobukwe's ultimate goals in the struggle against Apartheid. The PAC is expected to have a Langa/Sharpville rally in Langa tomorrow where the party's General Secretary Mfanelo Skwatsha and PAC veteran Achmad Cassiem will address supporters.
