PAC NEC MEDIA STATEMENT ON 7 JUNE 2009 ECONOMIC RECESSION
Noting that South Africa is now officially in an economic recession, the PAC calls for a moratorium on repossession of properties by financial institutions. We call upon on the financial institutions to enter into new terms with their clients until we are over the recession. We also call on government to engage all parties, business and trade unions to hammer out strategies to protect and sustain the existing jobs. In addition, government must release funds and accelerate support for small businesses which can help address unemployment. BLOATED CABINET The NEC also noted with concern that our newly-appointed cabinet is bloated. This has serious implications for a country that has budget constraints in a recession. We therefore call for the downsizing of the cabinet. We need to tighten belts, starting at cabinet level and save every cent. BEE The NEC has noted with concern the manner in which BEE has been driven, thereby undermining its intended objective. The NEC calls: (iii) on the government to end facilitating BEE transactions on a partisan basis, (iv) for the establishment of an agency to monitor BEE transactions and develop standards and guidelines that will ensure equitable distribution of wealth. The PAC will engage the relevant authorities. HIV & Aids The PAC extends its support to our countrymen and women who are affected by the scourge of HIV/Aids. We call for the acceleration of distribution of antiretrovirals to those who need them. Following the recent deaths in disused mines in Welkom, we call for a commission of inquiry into illegal mining. Nevertheless, we send condolences to the families of the bereaved.
