Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma must resign as head of state with immediate effect because he continues to embarrass South Africa, the Pan Africanist Youth Congress (PAYCO) of Azania said on Sunday. "We call upon him to do an honourable thing for the good of the Zuma family, his wives and the nation by resigning with immediate effect, to save our country from the never ending embarrassment he keeps on causing," PAYCO president Kwame Ndebele said. "We wish to dissuade a myth that has been created by Zuma and his supporters that polygamous marriages are part of African culture. We reject this lie with contempt." Zuma, a polygamist, early this month confirmed his relationship out of wedlock with Sonono Khoza - daughter of soccer boss Irvin Khoza. He had also fathered a child with her. The baby girl, who was born in October, was reportedly the president's 20th child.
"Polygamous relationships or marriages are not unique in Africa as at some point in history, they were practised everywhere in the world by feudal lords, kings and wealthy sexist males.
To this day, polygamous marriages are still practised in other parts of the world therefore we should not be duped to accept it as uniquely African," said Ndebele. "In Africa and among Zulus to be specific it is practised by less than five percent of men and this makes it laughable and illogical to refer to this feudal practice as African or Zulu culture," he said.
