Comrades and friends
Last night I attended the opening of the Remember Africa Exhibition at the Old
Fort Prison in Braamfontein, Jozi (This is at the new Constitution Hill, at the
Contitutional Court site). I had also been asked to speak on behalf of Mme
Veronica Sobukwe and the Robert Mangaliso SobukweTrust. Head of the memory
programme at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Verne Harris, said a few words on
the importance of justice and Sobukwe's contribution to the national liberation
struggle, and the need for continued research to discover pertinent information
on Sobukwe for the good of the country and the international community. This
exhibition on Sobukwe is worth attending, and I would urge all Africanists to
go and view the artefacts, photos and video recordings of documentaries on Prof.
The audience was mainly young people who are keen to learn from the past and to
find belonging for themselves in the present, and cast their minds on the
future developments of the country. A few notables and journalists also
attended. In this instance we were not talking to the converted. Lybon Mabasa
also spoke and took us back on memory lane describing the circumstances between
the death of Steve Biko in September 1977 and end of February 1978 when
arrangements of the funeral of Prof in Graaf Reinet were made. He is a friend
of the Sobukwe family. I on the other hand redefined Sobukwe as a pathfinder
and risk taker who also enhanced our understanding of the leadership of the
struggle as a combination of intellect and political activism 'from the loins
of Africa'. Once Sobukwe and the PAC gained proximity on a national level,
South Africa was never the same again. These were the pace setters. Of course
we have had leaders who are care takers, and others who are undertakers and
were an aberration in the great activism and concrete ideas articulated and
championed by Sobukwe. I also announced the intended programmes of the RMS
Trust in relation to ongoing education for young people.
I sincerely ask you to take your family and friends to the exhibition this
winter, and to Remember Africa.
Jaki
