Cde Sibeko I should say that I understand and agree with the sentiment not to make an outburst and miscalculated statement on Nelson Mandela during the mourning period when the glare and attention of the nation and the rest of the world is concerned about his passing. But I am a disciplined Africanist and I don't think we should shy away from making critical remarks on the misguided politics of Nelson Mandela when we are asked our opinion. If we don't declare our stand and political position, in a clear and concise manner, especially when falsehoods and distortions are deliberately issued out to pull wool over the masses, we will be as much guilty of the wrong-doings as the perpetrators. In my book, Nelson Mandela is on par with historical figures like Nonqawuse. She was hoodwinked and manipulated by Sir George Grey to "prophesy" that the African people who held fast to their fields and cattle should destroy them en masse in the belief that the sun shall rise from the west and set in the east. This as we all know was a pipe dream. Mandela teamed up with the legacy of Cecil Rhodes - the arch-colonialist - to pursue a joint program to mis-educate young people about the nature of British imperialism. His reconciliation with the conquest of Africa and its people by a double set of settlers has left us with an irreversible neo-colonialism which made the robbery of our birthright a legitimate proposition. The constitutional democracy has made the restoration of land to its owners, the indigenous people, a pipe dream. This is anathema to the basic principles of Pan Africanism. He is definitely a powerful character, smart and very influential. Even in his death. He is praised and treated as a saint. The productive forces of an advanced capitalist system puts emphasis on rewarding the individual who takes initiative. Idols, icons and celebrities capture the imagination of the public in a propaganda system that gives these individuals immense magical powers. To sell a bar of soap or television brand the capitalist signs up the endorsement of a sports person who has never even seen the insides of factory where manufacturing takes place. In the same way, leaders who believe in these myths about power and magic of the individual remove themselves from the masses in exchange of the comforts that leadership of this type brings. Nelson Mandela could be likened to a leader driving the followers who suffering from the sunflower syndrome. Like sunflowers following the sun, the people do not look to other options. They are rail-roaded to follow his decisions, whether these are correct or not, because he is the supposed champion of a cause. Mandela negotiated alone, took decisions alone, imposed these sell-out tendencies on his comrades, and he was lauded by the world for this. The world here refers to a white dominated environment wherein to be acknowledged as a leader of substance you should be introduced and supported by whites. He played by the rules of that game - effectively. The historians will describe him as a witty fox. Everything to everybody. In reality, it does not help us - the African people. He betrayed the Programme of Action of 1949. Revolutionary Pan Africanists are against imperialism. No super-power has the right to exploit our human and mineral resources, and to treat our sovereignty like dirt. We are against neo-colonialism. Our nationhood places us in the front as equals with the rest of humankind. The African humanism that we bring to the world is a contribution to the civilization that is sorely needed by all. Our hospitality and openness to others who are destitute and without a decent place to stay does not mean we should be permanently under the jackboot of oppression and exploitation. I'm actually very fond of discussing Mandela. The man built a house in Qunu modeled on his residence for senior warders in prison at Victor Vester. What was wrong with the man's psychology? You get out of prison and build a house looking exactly like your special privileges in prison? What sort of a free man is that? Mandela was an extra-ordinary man.
