If you only have 1 drive, then you will have to do it to the hard drive first then burn. I just got a second drive and I think you can designate a source drive and a destination drive. If you have 2 drives and 1 doesn't work, you'll do a lot better by getting a 2nd drive and getting someone to install it. They're really cheap these days. I replaced my cdrom drive, which didn't work anymore, with a combo drive for $48. I got this one at a computer show, but I've seen them online for very close to the same price, so if you can, just get it fixed and don't worry about making an image on the hard drive and then burning it from that.
