Hi, I don't know if I made it very clear, but here:
I am not trying to do anything with the computer; I have all that stuff working. Just the fact that the output of the receiver is connected to in input of the soundcard makes a change in level and distorts the sound from the power amp output of the receiver. It appears that the isolation is not good at the tape outputs and just being connected to the soundcard loads it down somehow. If I want good sound from the stereo and the computer is turned off, I must disconnect the computer from the system.
There must be a work-around for this. I'm sure I'm not the only one noticing it.

is it possible that you are using a receiver where the tape output is designed to be used as a monitor such that what comes out is then run back through the receiver? If so, turn off the monitor function and it should work well. The tape should still output to the computer without the feedback going back to the receiver. Just a possibility.
