Hi Kris,
The books are in contracted or grade 2 braille. That is why they read like jiberish in your word processor. You have to use special software to translate the books into regular text. There is some braille translation software that will do this that is available through the nfb for free. You can probably find it at their web site. The Kurzweil 1000 will also translate these books. The Book Port will as well.
good luck,

Hi All,
Well, I found the books I wanted from the NLS WebBraille catalog and downloaded several of them.
However, when I try to read them with my screenreader and braille display I
get garbage. There will be a few recognizable words with lots of various
symbols and number around them. You can't make any sense out of it and
there's no way I could try to read a book this way.
I had this problem at first when I just tried to open them from the NLS
website. So after reading the question and answer section I discovered how
to set up a brf file and I elected to use wordpad. So now when I download
they go to my documents file but when wordpad tries to open them they are a
mess.
What have I done wrong. Are there other changes I need to make for these files to display in readable form?
Thanks so much.
Kris H.
