I know the Marantz PMD670 and like it quite well. The new PMD671 uses the same casing but has more features, for instance, it can charge AA rechargeables. It can also record 24Bit Wave files. The 670 and 671 have a lot of mechanical switches, so that one can adjust quite a few parameters without having to use its built-in menu system. The most accessible recorder is of course the PTR2 (www.plextalk.com) which proberbly will be available at the end of November.
But if you are a Sony fan and have money, you might also check out the Sony PCM-D1, a flash recorder with 4 gigs of built-in memory a Memory Stick slot and built-in mics for $2000. As I said in another message here, if you want a recorder, with which one can mix without having to use a mixer, you'd proberbly need a hard disk machine like the Edirol R4. I think I'd use a PTR2 with a portable mixer. <*** Michael Lang ***> You wrote: > Hi all, A very interesting list. > I'm wondering if anyone has experience with broadcast quality stereo > portable recorders that also are even somewhat accessible. > I have a Marrantz PMD690 which does fantastic recordings, but, gets only > about 1 and a half hours on batteries, and uses to XLR mic plugs which are > cumbersome for a portable.
