I think that probably, the person did not get to the record part of volume control, since there is a microphone level control in "play" as well which is the monitor level, not the "recording" level of the microphone. It can be confusing, after all, most machines don't have an output level and an input level separate for a particular "input" device normally separated like that, so it's confusing. :)
