Bruce, Nothing but the time needed to compress? Well, how much time are we talking about? If I rip a standard length CD, with the level 8 compression, how much longer than I'm used to would it take to rip the Cd? Are we talking 5 or 10 extra minutes per CD, or hours, or what? And, what would most flac users consider a "reasonable" compression level?
Finally, if a higher compression level takes longer to compress when I rip a CD, is there any time-penalty when the file is decompressed during playback? Thanks. In Easy CD-DA Extractor, if I choose to rip a CD to flac, I am given a choice of 9 levels of compression (0-8), rather than a choice of bit rates. I assume that, the higher the level of compression, the smaller the resulting file will be. But, since this is a "lossless" format, what am I trading off for greater compression? In other words, why are there 9 levels of compression; why wouldn't one always just go for the highest compression, and forget about all the rest? What would one be losing by doing so?
