I don't know anything about the .pls files but the creation of M3U  
files is easy enough, they're just text files with the filenames in  
order of what's to be played and an optional path if required.
As for creating them? Well, you can do that in a text editor, there  
are ways you can get Winamp to do that of course and other methods..  
I do allot of sampling of audio books from CD and I find it easier to  
use Take Command with a simple batch file to create .M3U playlists  
for each disc and a main playlist with these nested into it,  
everything is then organised into a numbered directory structure, etc.
