I rememember when I was living in an apartment in the States, audio from a suage treatment company's two-way radios regularly found their way into my computer's speakers. Made for some interesting audio.

That's probably a long-shot. But it's the first thing that comes to mind, given your description, especially if it's more of what I would call a clicking (rather than tapping) sound.
