Hi Tom, Actually, I don't know why I didn't think of cleaning the head, etc, my brain must be in stand-by this weekend. Would you please remind me what is a safe solution to clean with? And the squeal does come through the speaker and headphones. Other tapes play just fine. I should probably state this is not a huge deal; it regards tape 1 of an NLS audio book I got late last week so I could read it over the long weekend. So, if my efforts don't resolve the problem, I'll just send it back and re-order hopefully a better copy.
