according to an article I read on another list Apple said the 4 th gen nano's had speech built in to the players and could be used on the go by blind users.

They use the technique Rockbox has used for around 5 years, where they use your default system voice on your PC/Mac to create files that live on the nano to announce menus, albums and songs. In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA).
