Thanks Jonathan. They mainly want it to record meetings and readings onto an ACER Aspire One notebook. They are not interested in any special effects, so Sound Forge Audio Studio would probably be sufficient for their needs. Without the presets, however, using wave hammer to even out the sound may be a problem.
The notebook only has a microphone input socket, so to connect it to the line output of an amplifier, I would think they would need a USB sound card with a line input. Can you or anyone suggest one which would be suitable for this purpose. Has anyone used Sound Forge on an ACER Aspire One or similar and if so, has it worked well.
