Simple! the programme starts recording the show at the scheduled time. Suppose you're out having a cup of tea or whatever and you return 5 minutes later to only find that the show's been going for the last 3 minutes, you can press the "Play" button to hear what's already been recorded over those last 3 minutes, in other words from the beginning of the recording, you can pause and resume as often as you need to - handy for when taking telephone calls and the like so when you pause playback, Radio Shift continues to record until the scheduled time is elapsed.
