audio through sound card is choppy

Hi All,I am using win-xp pro with all updates.  However, when using the onboard 
soundcard, both screenreaders have a kind of choppy sound.  I am nnot sure how 
to explain it better.  All the sound comes through but sort of choppy.  I went 
under the device manager and updated the drivers with the same result.
Does anyone have any idas how to make the speech come through smoother?
