I think I know why It happened, because I was switching between VPN etc and I'm not worried about that so much, just resetting this damn password, I'll get some sighted help and see if we can work it out if I can't in the meantime.
Yes, Apple use a secret question which you give when you create your account but they also use email orthentication.
