Updating is always, or almost always, a matter of personal preference. The Smantha tts voice is greatly improved. So if you read text files or Word docs with the Pocket, you'll probably find it worthwhile. You can now read unprotected e-pub books. If you read documents in that format, it's worth updating.
The shifting of menus and the text search are likely not so critical.
