Most routers these days have VPN facilities however you need to check that they support VPN clients rather than just act as VPN servers, being able to support Clients mean a Router can connect to a remote VPN service such as Witopia etc.
There are several Asus Routers that support VPN clients including the RTN66U - bigger Brother to the RTN56U I was using - but as you say that router doesn’t support the new AC protocol and I think that anyone considering a new router should consider the AAC protocol for a number of reasons. The most convincing is that the power of the radios in Routers that support AAC are much more powerful than those that don’t. Second, the data throughput speed is much faster. Third, all modern devices such as Notebooks, Tablets and Smart Phones support it.
