The 6S and 6S+ are remarkably strong and robust models, they're actually
thicker than the 6 and 6+ phones were to accommidate that extra steel
frame to make them stronger.
So if we take the headphones socket out we can leave that steel frame or
something similar in place and make the phone thinner? I guess that's
what Apple is thinking about but I'm not surprised that some are making
mountains and of molehills over this, quite amusing actually.

greatly extended battery life in demanding situations.
and/or 3, a thicker phone would have more room for possibly more storage
memory, and/or a more powerful CPU.

The thickness or lack thereof, is that a real problem? There are benefits to
be had, stereo speakers for one thing could be made a great deal of use of,
not just for music but for games, mobility Apps and the phone generally
being a little louder than it is now.
To illustrate the point a little if I may, I have an iPad Mini.
No, not quite the same as an iPhone given the Mini is a little harder but it
does have stereo speakers whereas my previous iPads didn’t.
The sound given that extra speaker was noticed the minute I enabled
Voiceover.
