Sunday, March 9
---------------
The last day of the Harbor Cup looked like there might not be a race.
The waters of the pacific were glassy so teams from the cold east
coast soaked up the sun and went swimming. After two hours of waiting
the Postponement flag came down with 4-5 knots of breeze from more
southerly than the previous days. Cal Maritime came out of the blocks
fast and led the whole way. USC and Navy did not have good races so
CMA went into the last race with an 8 point lead. The breeze was going
right as it filled in to about 10 knots. CMA was OCS in the final race
and forced to jibe back to the start line and hit the right side of
the course. To everyone's surprise the were first to windward mark of
the three lap course. USC and Navy kept the pressure on but would end
up second and third in the tenth race and in the regatta. Cal Maritime
won their fourth Harbor Cup. Thanks to the amazing folks at LAYC
especially regatta chair Terry Brown, PRO Tom Trujillo and scorer
Carol Armitage. Thanks to the Port of LA and Community Bank and all
the other sponsors.
