Yale University and Boston College lead the first day of the Sperry Women's
Semifinal Championship
NEWPORT, R.I. (May 21, 2019) – The 2019 Intercollegiate Sailing
Association’s series of National Championships began today in Newport, R.I.
on Newport Harbor. The Sperry College Sailing Women’s Semifinal
Championship hosted by Brown University with the New England
Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) also supported by the
University of Rhode Island. The semifinals are the precursor and qualifying
event for the Sperry College Sailing Women’s National Championship Finals,
which will begin Thursday, May 23 at 10 a.m.

The semifinals are divided into two fleets, an Eastern and Western
semifinal, each with 18 teams from across the nation. The top nine teams
from each fleet will advance to the finals on Thursday. The competitors are
racing on windward-leeward courses with four legs.

Today racing was in nice sunny conditions with cool winds from the
west/northwest averaging around 10-20 knots through out the day. Sailors
had to navigate a short difficult chop and an outgoing tide most of the
day. The Western fleet sailed in Z420s and the Eastern fleet sailed in FJs.

Racing finished up around 6 p.m. and eight races were completed in both A
and B division. Racing is scheduled to begin at the same time tomorrow at
10 a.m. The two fleets will switch boats, so the Eastern fleet will sail
the Z420s and the Western will sail FJs. There are 10 races to complete the
rotations tomorrow.

After the day of racing Yale University ended up on top of the Western
Semifinal fleet almost 50 points ahead of Dartmouth College in second place
and the College of Charleston is sitting in third.

“The strong winds today made racing mostly about boat speed,” says Bill
Healy, associate head coach for Yale University, “We had to overcome
adversity today with a few over early starts and hitting a mark in a race,
but fortunately we were able to turn those races into top five finishes.

“Today we wanted to get a feel for the current in the harbor and also the
mainsails in the Z420s, which are more powerful than we are used to,” says
Healy. “Tomorrow will be another long day and we will be switching fleets
into the FJ's, so we will keep up our boat speed and work on our crew
combinations.”

Sailing today for Yale is Louisa Nordstrom '20 with Kathryn Clulo '21 and
Claudia Loiacono '21 in A-division and Christine Klingler '20 with
Catherine Mollerus '21 and Kira Woods '19 in B-division.

In the Eastern fleet Boston College is leading 17 points ahead of host
school Brown University in second place followed by Georgetown University
in third.

“We were very fast today,” says Greg Wilkinson, head coach for Boston
College, “It would be great if we were this fast all of the time – which we
have the ability to be – we were able to sail our own race and not get
pinned to a side today.”

“We are looking to get past tomorrow, which will be another full day of
races, but we are looking forward to some different conditions and we are
hoping for a sea breeze,” says Wilkinson.

Sailing today for Boston College in A-division is Isabella Loosbrock '19
with Emma Perry '19 and Sophia Reineke '21 with Tara Ferraris '19 in
B-division.

Today two protests were filed and one breakdown request. One protest was
withdrawn, another disallowed and the U.S. Naval Academy was awarded
breakdown points for their first two races of the day in A-division.

It was a long day of racing and the scores are close for the top nine teams
in both fleets. Tomorrow more close and competitive sailing will continue
in the semifinals. It will be the last day of racing in the semifinals
portion of the championship. No race will start after 5 p.m. tomorrow. The
top 18 teams will be determined and they will advance to the finals on
Thursday.
