Top 18 Sperry Women's teams advance to final championship

NEWPORT, R.I. (May 22, 2019) – The first two days of racing in the Sperry
College Sailing Women’s Semifinal Championship has wrapped up and the top
18 teams have been finalized to advance to the finals, which will take
place tomorrow and Friday. The events are hosted by Brown University with
the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) also supported
by the University of Rhode Island at host site Sail Newport Sailing Center
in Fort Adams State Park in Newport, R.I.

The top teams in the Eastern and Western semifinal fleets raced through a
blustery northerly breeze in the morning, which died out mid-afternoon and
eventually shifted to a steady southerly breeze around 10-15 knots. The
sailors were able to complete five races today on windward-leeward courses.
The Eastern fleet sailed in Z420s and the Western in FJ’s.

A short break around 2 p.m. to let the breeze fill in delayed racing a
little bit, so the last races ended at the time limit today of 5 p.m.

After the day of racing, #3 ranked Yale University held their place at the
top of the Western fleet, 46 points ahead of Dartmouth College in second
place and the College of Charleston held onto third. Notable today is the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology made a big leap from 10th place
yesterday up to 4th place today qualifying for the finals. Boston
University and Cornell University also jumped up into the top nine to claim
a finals position.

“We faced some tactical challenges today, so we will need to be more sharp
tomorrow and Friday,” says Bill Healy, associate head coach for Yale
University. “Luckily the women are aware of what needs to be done, so we
should be good to go.”

“Being clean at the start and around marks will be important moving
forward,” says Healy. “With the wind predictions it will be an athletic
contest the next few days and we will hope to have lots of speed.”

Sailing for Yale is Louisa Nordstrom '20 with Kathryn Clulo '21 and Claudia
Loiacono '21 in A-division and Christine Klingler '20 with Catherine
Mollerus '21 and Kira Woods '19 in B-division.

In the Eastern fleet, host school, and #1 ranked Brown University came out
on top displacing Boston College to second followed by Georgetown
University, who held onto third place. Stanford University moved up today
into 9th place to earn a qualifying spot for the finals.

“Our goal going into the regatta was to try to be in a good position after
the first day of racing so that we could rest some of our starters for the
finals,” says John Mollicone, Barry Family director of sailing and head
coach for Brown University. “We have a deep women’s team and we were able
to get a lot of sailors on the water – I think around 11 different people
raced today.”

“The two big things for the racing over the next two days will be watching
the current and getting off the starting line,” says Mollicone. “It is
important to know what the current is doing and going into the finals the
starting line is going to be more challenging with the top teams on it.”

Sailing for Brown University in A-division is Ragna Agerup '20, Sophie
Hibben '19, Maxine De Havenon '19, Madeleine McGrath '22, Emma Montgomery
'22, Megha Malpani '19 and in B-division is Hannah Steadman '20, Rachel
Foster '20, Emma Montgomery '22, Annabelle Hutchinson '21, Maxine De
Havenon '19, Abigayle Konys '19, Emily Ito '19.

Tomorrow the scoreboard is wiped clean and racing intensifies as the top 18
teams compete for the national championship title and the Gerald C. Miller
Trophy. Racing is set to being at 10 a.m. in Newport Harbor. Live coverage
of the racing will begin midday.
