Eric,
I just went through this for my 7500 and 8500. If you do not get
an apple branded cd-rom you may not be able to use it successfully as a
boot disc. I did try a Panasonic (Matcushita) 24X Model CR-508 Rev. B and
it would not read CDRW or CDR nor would it work as a boot disc using
Apple's driver. Interesting to note that I am using a Panasonic
(Matcushita) 24X Model CR-508 (note no revision "B") presently on my 8500
and it reads everything and is bootable. It is an "Apple" OEM CD-Rom. Why
the big difference I do not know. I have recently purchased another CD-Rom
24X pulled from an 8500 that has worked great. I think that the fastest
drive apple "made" was 24X.
I tried using CD-Rom tool kit and its drivers with the Panasonic
Rev. B model and it made no difference in its ability to read CDR or CDRW
nor was it bootable.
