Kari,
You should hold down the c key until you see the smiley face and get some
disk boot activity. Then you can run disk first aid on the hard disk,
provided it is mountable...

Subject: Re: hard drive question-mark disk icon
hello everyone,
i'm new to the list and am finding myself relieved to have found a community
of power mac owners. unfortunately mine is not doing well. i've got a
9600/200 baby that shows the question mark disk graphic when i boot up. i
did some research and tried to boot off the OS 9 disk i have (as i got the
computer used and without the original systems disk but have upgraded from
OS 8.0 to 8.6 and then OS 9 since purchasing it) by pressing the c key while
turning on the machine. nothing happens and the graphic remains. am i
correct in assuming at this point a techie needs to salvage my hard disk
information and install a new one? and if so, how much do hard disks go for
these days?
thanks,
kari
