In reality it's just one Desktop. The other monitor is just the 
extensions of the same desktop. One monitor get's selected that has 
your menu bar; so when you open an application on, for example, your 
left monitor, the menu bar can be on your Right monitor (or left 
monitor); You have a choice of which monitor has the menu bar; you 
can go back and forth.  The cursor can also go from left to right or 
from right to left to monitor depending on which you select as your 
main monitor  i.e.,  normally, the monitor directly in front of you 
is your main monitor with your menu bar, if you put your 2nd monitor 
to your left, then the cursor should go from right to left from your 
main monitor; or if your other monitor is on your right, you will 
want to the cursor to go from right to left. But that is how I see 
it; someone may see it differently. All this is done in the Monitors 
control panel.
