>Frankly, so? If it bugs you that much, why waste time?

I'm with Cameron, lets's talk about computers for awhile. We just got over
that whole thing with the guy that was all over Kyle Hansen a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I am the very proud ownder of a 9600/350
(304MB/17GB/24x/Zip/MacOS9.1/LinuxPPC/WTF) and I wonder who has an opinion
about some upgrades I'd like to do... ;)

1)I'd like a new video card, the stock TwinTurbo (4MB?) seems a little old
for such a nice machine. Who likes what? I'm leaning towards ATI Radeon,
because I like sweet things, but I'm not wealthy.

2)I might go for an XLR8 upgrade, although I'll be very very sorry to see
the 350MHz Mach V 604e go... Which processor do you folks think gives me
the most bang for my buck (within the XLR8 family)? I'm not a photoshop
guy, I'd just like the OSX option, really. Also, is anybody using one of
these upgrades with LinuxPPX (Kernel 2.2x)? I have only used Sonnet
upgrades in the past, and I don't see how it would work right in Linux
(read: without drivers). Will the XLR8 be better (or is there something I'm
missing about the Sonnet)? If I can't run LinuxPPC in a reasonable fashion
with the upgrade, I'll probably buy a used iMac for OSX, and keep 9.x/Linux
on the 9600, keeping the 604ev.

If I may praise the Mac for awhile, I sould love to share how sweet I think
it is that the 9600 has 12 DIMM slots, and 6 PCI, along with built-in SCSI,
ethernet, and the "Fantastic Easy-Open/Roll-Out Case".

Just for the sake of argument, how do you think this machine would compare
with a new iBook 500 in terms of performance (other stuff aside) if I bought
a 500MHz G3 upgrade, vid card and USB/Firewire card for it? I realize that
I have only a 50MHz bus, but the iBook just has a 66MHz bus (i think), so
that's not an extraordinary difference.

Anyway, I'm just soliciting opinions, and wanting to calk Macs instead of
politics. Anybody feel the urge to sound off about their favorite model of
PCI PowerMac, and why it's the sweetest?

Have a good day
Dave Cooley
