Hi all,
Anyone using a Metabox G3 or G4 upgrade? Now that they're out of the upgrade
business, what software are you using to control the processor: Metabox,
XLR8, Sonnet, other? How's stability? Did you find any improvements after
going to one OS vs. another?

I'm asking because I have a G4 Zif upgrade in my B&W Yosemite. Apologies for
the fact that it's not a PCI Mac, but given the solid advice usually found
on the list, I'd appreciate any help/experience/advice you might have here.

The problem I'm having is probably related to firmware: either the firmware
update I had to run on the Yosemite prior to installing the Metabox Zif, or
the firmware update I ran on my VST Ultratek ATA/66 card (the problems
surfaced after updating the firmware on the Ultratek about 10 days ago).
The problem is that the Mac, after going to sleep as per the Energy Saver
control panel, or after a system freeze (in IE5, etc.), will require a force
restart;
- upon restart, I get a flashing question mark;
- I've been unable to continue startup using an emergency CD or Zip,
requiring another force restart;
- if the Mac finally does find a System Folder on one of my 2 partitions, it
continues startup, but then freezes at some point, requiring another force
restart;
- always, at some point after multiple force restarts, the Mac boots into
Open Firmware, with the following code onscreen:
Mac OS: Boot Failure! (0xF3C481F6)
Mac OS: ROM Checksum Failure!
Apple Powermac 1,1 1.1f4 BootRom
built on 04/09/99
Open Firmware 3.1.1
- I'm then given the choice of continuing startup or shutting down, and I
shut down;
- I can then resurrect the Mac by resetting the Cuda switch and, if
necessary, starting up from an emergency disk; I then have to repair the HD
and a couple of times I've reformatted with OS9.04's Drive Setup and
reinstalled OS9.04

Any ideas? When I added the G4 Zif, I had to update the firmware: hence the
BootROM version is "1.1f4". Does the problem seem firmware-related? Any
known cures?
Given that only the Yosemite required the firmware update (if I remember
correctly), I've been thinking of sticking the G4 Zif on an XLR8 Carrier
(got one alread) and selling it to a PCI Mac owner; could then afford a new
G4 Zif, maybe from someone still in business ;-)
By the way, any problems installing a different manufacturer's Zif in my
Yosemite if I ran the Metabox firmware update? Or was the update
"universal"?

Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Chris H
