It has been agreed by many starmax users to number the pci slots beginning
at the mother board. 1,2,3 etc. up.
There is a thing between slot 2 and 3,4,5 (minitower) called a pci bridge.
CPU and Video cards seem to perform best in slots 1 or 2.
I have: Newertech G3-L2 cpu card slot 1, ixmicro ultimate rez video card
slot 2, Keyspan 2-port usb card slot 3.

I know power is a consideration but has always been confusing to me.
For your usb be sure to go to Apple support and get it.
Fire wire, i don't know.
