Transfering files between macs? If the macs have ethernet, Timbuktu is THE way (TCP/IP). I ditched Appletalk long ago, unless I had to use it- its just too slow and a not as fast to set up. If you are talking less than 20MB of files or so, I'd email them to myself or use an FTP server.
