folk,

i'm trying to get applescript to work. i've never used them
much, but my curiousity got the better of me yesterday.
unfortunately, something seems to have gone awry. all scripts
seem to do nothing.
every time i try to launch the script editor, i get
"Could not initialize the application because the dialect is not available.".

i don't know much about applescript. if i used them more than
once a month, i might be able to pinpoint an action that may
have caused their failure.

7600/g3sonnet400 120MB/2.2GB running OS8.1

files in place:
EXTENSIONS
     AppleScript
     AppleScriptLib
SCRIPTING ADDITIONS
     DIALECTS
          English Dialect
and, of course, Script Editor. but no Script Editor preferences.

i've tried various approaches, inspected as many files as
possible... rebuilt the desktop, trashed Finder pref, and even
went so far as to download a _hideoulsy_ large file from apple -
only to discover that it's intended for OS 9. ( i managed to
make an entire pot of coffee wile waiting - on a cable
connection! ). hmm. nothing in their applescript section about
earlier versions, and nothing on their older downloads section
for installing applescript. search engine results for
applescript installers (or updaters) kept pointing me to pages
that point back to apple's site.

at least i had a fresh cup of coffee.
does anyone have an idea/experience about what i may be missing?
i wish to avoid the sacrifice of a year old frisbee without
blemishes to shub-internet.

peter
