We (this side of the Pacific) have a high regard for Yamaha burners being
the standard with which to gauge other brands. Perhaps it wasn't entirely
the burner's fault but installed as an internal drive adds extra load to
your 9600's power supply (225 Watts) particularly if other devices
(internal Zip, tape drive) are also drawing power.
Burning a CD draws a lot of current for the task (unlike reading a CD) and
with what's available from the PS, may cause the drive's voltage regulator
circuit to overheat and eventually fail.
I have an internal Yamaha 8/4/24S on an external case with its own power
supply independent of the Mac's, and the option of moving it from Mac to
Mac and from Mac to PC. So far it is doing well and it's over a year now.
But if you may, try Plextor's.
