Yes Marsha.  I was staying out of this one but I'll answer.   The reason is that
the 8500 (for example) needs the FW extensions to find the FW card and then the
FW HD.  Get it?  It has to boot from an internal drive so that it can "activate"
the FW card and then the drive attached to the card.  It isn't possible to boot
from a drive that the Mac can't "see.'
