No 1st hand experience with larger simms, they'll physically fit & the machine might recognise them. It's a type 1 comm slot and ethernet cards are available for that or the LC slot (identical to the slots in thousands of inexpensive 68k Mac LCs). It shouldn't take a lot of $ to make a 5300 a useful device for the home, a good thing, since they're not worth a lot. FWIW, it may be able to handily outrun a 100mhz pentium.
